First of all, I’d like to wish everyone a Happy Valentine’s Day! As J likes to say, Valentine’s Day should not be the only day to say and show that you love someone; it should be everyday you have together them. But at least, it gives us a reason to dine out and celebrate! I have heard great things about The Winery, so we decided to take a trip to Surry Hills for a nice lunch.
It is located on Crown Street, next to Pieno Cafe and Zushi Japanese restaurant. Just walk through the old sandstone gates and you’ll notice the old signposts amid the flowers and trees and outdoor furniture under big black umbrellas. Empty wine bottles on the tables are used as a vase for the flowers, while also painted with the table number or the word ‘reserved’. Sculptures stand in array along the pathway to the counter where the waiter awaits to greet us and show us to our tables. The whole outdoor arrangement creates a very antique and trendy atmosphere.
Lemon Lime Bitters ($4.50)
‘Steak frites’, café de paris ($29.50)
Many people have recommended the Steak Frites as a ‘must have’ meal. And this was very well justified. J really enjoyed the steak for its juiciness and tenderness, but said it was no match to the steak he had at Sugaroom. The only fault he found with this dish was that there was still some fat left on the steak which he had to remove. He loved the sauce, but as it was plentiful, some of the fries got all soggy before he could eat them. Great dish nevertheless!
Roast chicken, grape & apple salad, champas dressing ($24)
I had the roast chicken salad which had a nice sweet and savoury combination. The chicken was juicy and tender on the inside and crispy on the outside. The grapes and apple gave the dish a nice sweet touch, and went really well with the dressing. There were also a few walnuts added to the plate. I’m not a huge fan of walnuts, so these were left on the plate. Great dish overall!
Double chocolate brownie, ice cream, fairy floss ($14)
Now on to dessert! The chocolate brownie had a soft gooey centre, while the outside was firm and crunchy. The vanilla ice cream was well set. As long as it doesn’t starting melting, I’m cool with it. The fairy floss on top added a nice fluffy texture. Amazing dessert!
I will definitely be back soon for the crab and zesty lemon mayo toastie and chocolate brownie again!
